Hour of Code

The week of Dec. 9 - 15 was Computer Science Education Week, an annual event. This year the initiative called "Hour of Code" has taken the world by storm. Backed by the nonprofit organization Code.org, heads of tech companies, our current and past presidents, athletes, musicians, you name it... the word went out to encourage students to learn coding by trying one of many coding tutorials. The goal was 10,000,000 people. As of Sunday, Dec. 15th , over 15,000,000 people have learn coding. This included 167 countries. http://venturebeat.com/2013/12/08/president-obama-kicks-off-cs-education-week-with-code-org-dont-just-play-on-your-phone-program-it/

This past week at Summitt over 400 students participated in the "Week of Code." They found it fun but also challenging. Some declared they definitely want to be coders when they grow up.

One kindergarten class participated using iPads and the interactive SMARTBoard.

Students worked together and showed great problem-solving skills.

Even one of our fantastic substitute teachers tried her hand at learning coding so she could help the students while they were learning. (Thank you Paula! You ROCK!)

It was a fantastic week! If you want to learn more about this event go to:
